Sacrifice of the one, so that the rest may live.

Up until a few weeks ago I was Supervisor of 9 people, one of whom is living with a Manager in the office. I also spent a number of years as a diversity trainer for new managers and a liason on diverstiy issues.
On Halloween this manager decides to come in wearing blackface as his costume. Many took offense and brought the issue to my attention. As his position was senior to mine, my instructions are to report something like this to home office. I did that and they acknowledged receipt of the complaint by email back to me.
About a week later, I get called into HR and the girlfriend of this manager said I made racial comments in one of my staff meetings. I hadn't, told them I hadn't. They said that another manager had heard it (her boyfriend) and could verify it. I wondered how this could be if he was never in my staff meetings. Anyway they say they are going to perform and investigation.
Fast forward a couple of days, investigation is complete and I am called back into HR. They inform me they are firing me. They say they cannot determine who is telling the truth (my entire staff supported me except the one who made the charge and so to protect the company against a lawsuit in situations like this, they are letting me go. No severence - nothing.
So as I ponder whether or not to go to an attorney or simply call the NAACP and News outlets, I simply wonder how people sleep at night.

You should do all those things. This is clearly wrongful termination and hopefully the employees there will vouch for you

The problem is that even though you know you are right and you think people will vouch for you, they don't because they are scared to lose their jobs! The same thing happened to me. It is so unfortunate but you just have to forget that place; people do get what they deserve eventually.
